It is also known as Clinical Engineering which combines bio-medical techniques with engineering.
It requires the knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. These engineers get to work as Biomedical Engineer, Researcher, Maintenance Engineer, Installation Engineer etc. They can also go for the profile of Patent Analyst or even Professor in the respective field.
These engineers support the medical experts by means of engineering support in research, diagnosis and treatment.
The major exams to get admission in Biomedical Engineering are JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, SRMJEE, KIITEE, VITEEE, COMEDK UGET, AMUEEE, MU – OET etc., followed by appearing in the counseling process.
These engineers get the jobs in big and reputed medical companies and hospitals such as Siemens Healthcare, Toshiba Medical Systems, Philips Healthcare, Cipla, Johnson & Johnson, Texas Instruments Inc., GE Healthcare, Apollo Hospital Enterprises, Stryker Max Hospital, Deloitte, Medanta, Medicity, Larsen & Toubro, Columbia Asia Hospital, BPL Healthcare, Dr. Lal Path Labs, and other manufacturers of surgical and support equipment.
The Biomedical engineers get the chance to create equipment for surgery, biosensors, develop system for patient care, and even do research to innovate and setup labs.
While the starting salary of Instrument Engineer, Maintenance Engineer and Clinical Engineer ranges between 2 – 3 lakhs per annum, the Installation Engineer can bag around 8 lakhs per annum. The salary differs from the profiles that you take but falls in decent salary slabs.
To be a Biomedical Engineer, one must have interest in knowing about design and practical working, must be attentive and possess analytical skills. The other desired traits are good communication and team spirit.
The courses available are Diploma in Biomedical Engineering and B.Tech/BE in Biomedical Engineering/Biotechnology for which the eligibility is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology as subjects with minimum 50% marks from a recognized board.
After B.Tech/B.E. in respective field, one may proceed for M.Tech/ME in Biomedical Engineering/Biotechnology.
The Doctorate is also available in Biomedical Engineering for which the M.Tech/ME pass-outs with a minimum of 55% marks are eligible.
The fee ranges from 1 lakh to 5 lakhs per annum apart from hostel and other expenses.
The major institutes for pursuing Biomedical Engineering are IITs, NITs, MIT, LPU, SRM Institute of Science & Technology-Chennai, Jaipur National University-Jaipur, BITS-Pilani, and Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences-Pune etc.
