The career does not necessarily define your job and its prospects but covers the preparation for it in terms of qualifications and skills. Therefore, if you are in a job search or you are already serving any organization, or even if you are in school days, you need to set yourself for the great achievements you aim for.
Covid has set a “new normal” and there would be no looking back. A new set of opportunities have popped up. New Sectors have evolved and new paradigms have developed.
All we need to do is to be physically and mentally strong along with developing the strength that reflects well in your CV. You now need to portray yourself as a strong contender in the job market. Now, the jobs would be majorly in soft-skill-intensive profiles. Therefore, we need to develop and enhance our skills.
- Leadership – it is not limited to white-collared people but is an open trait for all. It is about strategizing and communicating the same with adequate encouragements and well-taken feedbacks from the peers. Owning the task and taking the accountability is the best trait of any leader.
- Innovation – Thinking out of box and evolving through cross-disciplinary approach is what the new-age organizations look for. The creative mindset helps to tackle the challenges with a positive frame of mind.
- Adaptability – A couple of years ago, people used to function in the periphery of their organisations but at this moment of time, most of the employees are working from home. Most likely, the trend is going to continue. So, flexibility and adaptability is the skill that is sought for under the new circumstances.
- Analytical skills – The skills to think deeper and rational is the most critical skill that generally the candidates seem to lack. The fundamental questions like What, Why, How the things are happening; Who are going to affected; Why the task is important, and others form the base for critical reasoning.
- Technical skills – The jobs have shifted to online mode including the classes and other activities. The digital divide is good to debate upon but in the practical world, such a gap is fatal for the candidates. The specialized digital skillsets that are in tune with the demand in the market, are just necessary. The most commonly used tech terms are data literacy, computer programming, big data, the Cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain etc.
- Communication skills – It is not about the writing and oratory skills but the way communicate to ease the people around and make them comfortable is crucial. Furthermore, with the digital platforms in use, one needs to aware about writing emails, and communicating through virtual meetings.
- Social and emotional intelligence – the skills to understand others and display empathy through words and behavior is demand of the day. One needs to develop the social connect and be able to give warmth through their gestures and actions. This helps to grow mature and maintain a personal relationship with the people around.
The above skillsets were always sought for but hold more weightage in the Covid Times and beyond. The employers and the employees; the teachers and the students; and even the parents and society need to work upon and give due importance so that the new generation of the employees are well-equipped with these vital traits.
